Moment of Clarity

A lot of my friends have a hard time understanding why I don't love LOST. Most of them are deeply invested in the show, gathering weekly to take part in the Thursday night airing. I usually attend these viewings less for the show and more for the community.

And when a Kanye West song randomly surfaced on my iPod, I realized something: I feel the same way about LOST as I do Kanye West.

I can acknowledge that both bring creativity and originality to their arts. Both are very well done and deserve a large fan following. But neither one is really for me.

In regards to LOST, I've never been drawn to the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I'm apathetic towards Lord of the Rings. Star Wars is kinda fun but ultimately I can live without it. It's just not for me. Look at my favorite movies listed on Facebook and tell me how many of them fall into that category.

And when it comes to Kanye, I have a similar taste difference. Kanye's sound is a little too polished for me. From his music to his clothes to his lyrics....it's glossy. I like my rappers way more raw, way more grimy, and to be honest way more angry. Like The Game.

I can watch LOST and listen to Kanye and it's fine. I can enjoy both from time to time but ultimately neither one of them really grab me. I think there are more compelling rappers than Kanye and more compelling shows than LOST.

I think Kanye is a very talented (not to mention annoying) artist. And LOST produces some interesting television in a time that is saturated with thoughtless reality shows. I'll never be able to say LOST doesn't ask a lot of its viewers, and there's something to be said for that.

I thought about stating my creative criticisms of both...but if you're a LOST or Kanye fan, I don't think you wanna read that.

So just know that I respect both. Kanye is bringing a different sound to hip-hop, and LOST is infusing originality and thought into prime time.
