Artists Who Make Music Better

The past two nights I've gone on late night drives. Windows down, sunroof open, listening to Coldplay, thinking about life. It's been very relaxing. I think I can safely say that Coldplay's music probably connects me on a deeper spiritual level that the vast majority of worship music that's out there. I just think there's more soul in their music and lyrics. I don't just brings me to a better place than worship music does.

I'm just very happy that Coldplay, the band, exists right now. They make the music world better. Then I got to thinking....what other artists make the music world better? What bands/singers/artists actually matter to the music industry in a good way? Who can we not do without?

So I'm making a list and checking it thrice. These are the artists that I think make the music industry better. I do love some of these artists, but this is NOT a list of my favorites. Please feel free to add your own...

(in no particular order)

Beastie Boys
Damien Rice
Ben Folds
Ben Kweller
Alicia Keys
System of a Down
Kanye West
Gwen Stefani
Zack de la Rocha
Justin Timberlake

Who am I forgetting?

I kinda want to make a list of artists who are making the music world worse (50 cent, Mariah Carey, so many more...) but why bring such negativity into a positive post?

By the way, I'm surprised and very happy so many people have read the Conan speech. It's well worth it! The man is a genius.

Using only their positive influence on the current music scene as rationale, a list of possible additions:

Ben Folds
Postal Service
The Killers
Green Day

To name a few...

I'd like to add Death Cab for Cutie on there... I know kaydo has Postal Service on there, but Death Cab deserves recognition as well. I don't necessarily know anything about their "positive" influence, but I know I absolutely love their music, and think they're making the music world better!

To be the minority in musical tastes here, I have to add Better Than Ezra and Counting Crows...

There's nothing better than a late night drive, moon roof open, listening to BTE's "WWOZ".

I'd have to agree... how silly of me to forget to add Counting Crows... granted, I've grown a little disenchanted with them over the past couple of years (I used to be totally gung-ho about them, but "August and Everything After" I would probably consider to be one of my top 5 albums. Therefore, I second the motion to add Counting Crows to the list.

It'd be interesting to read a little side blurb on each artist you listed, as to why you think those specific artists make the music industry better? Why Gwen Stefani and not Mariah Carey...*curious*

I like a lot of those in there. You had Ben Kweller and Damien Rice on there, so let me suggest one more that I'm nearly positive you'll probably be floored by.

Patty Griffin

Eeek. A ridiculous talent. Check out "1,000 Kisses" for a good introduction to her work...

Actually I DID list Ben Folds in the original group of artists.

Some of y'all missed it, but we won't mention names.
